In this Musical Investigation, we will examine the link between the musical style of the Jazz and the Baroque eras. "Although the term jazz became current in 1917, the music itself was probably heard as early as 1900. At the end of the war, the psychology reverted: swing became a bad memory, and it suddenly sounded anachronistic. He explained that it was wobbly and the batter cannot do anything with it. When asked to define jazz music, Louis Armstrong once said, “Man, if you gotta ask, you’ll never know.” Jazz music is difficult to define mainly because there are so many different styles.

It starts with a melody played by the entire band, then breaks down into improvised individual solos and then returns to the melody in a slightly altered, often more elaborate way. More importantly than Shepp's sound-blocks, however, is his melodic material: of which "the melodic flow is broken into atoms" (italics added; Jost 108) (see Figure 17 below).

In the case of jazz there are too many factors from too many cultures to make the case for a straight timeline to its beginnings; in fact its history plays more like two or three parallel timelines which finally come to a head to create a new artform. But the assimilation of blues would cause a Copernican revolution. As a consequence RPI has not only reached a new generation of fans, but the increased interest and appreciation have led to new material being released. The repertoire is largely dance songs for weddings and other celebrations. Whether it be piano, trumpets, drums or the double bass as the primary instrument, the entire concept of smooth jazz is to take the listener to another world, one which gets their foot tapping.
